TAB NZ & legal

For a racing site, the legal starting point is the tote and the body that runs it. This section sets out who holds the exclusive right to take bets.

TAB NZ has held it since 28 June 2025: section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020 bars every other person from offering racing or sports betting to anyone in New Zealand. Its brands are TAB and Betcha, which are one operator. A licence to apply for does not exist, nor does a register of bookmakers.

Liability sits with the operator, as DIA reads it, and an individual may not be convicted for placing a bet offshore. Age 18 is the minimum for betting with TAB NZ.
