Privacy policy – dogracingnz.com
A site on greyhound racing needs little personal information, and dogracingnz.com collects only what running an information site requires. The Privacy Act 2020 and its information privacy principles (section 22) set the rules.
The responsible agency
The agency responsible for the personal information collected through dogracingnz.com is whoever runs the site. Name, address and e-mail are published at $$DOMAIN$$, and every question about personal information goes through that channel.
Information collected
A log entry is written by the server whenever a page is opened: IP address, date and time, the address requested, the amount of data sent, the referring page and the browser type. Logs are there for security and for detecting abuse, and after 90 days they are deleted or shortened so that they no longer point to a person. A message to the editors brings a name, an e-mail address and the text of the message, used only to reply. Reader accounts, deposits and bets do not exist on the site, so no payment details or identity documents are collected.
Purposes and principles
Collection serves lawful purposes tied to the site: keeping it running and secure, replying to messages and, after a banner choice, measuring audience (IPP 1). People are told what is collected and why (IPP 3), and use stays within those purposes (IPP 10). Automated decision-making and profiling are not done.
Providers and disclosure abroad
Information is not sold. Providers that host the site, deliver its content and handle e-mail receive some of it, as do public authorities when the law requires. Where a provider holds information outside New Zealand, disclosure abroad happens only if comparable safeguards bind the recipient or the person was told and agrees, as IPP 12 requires.
Security and retention
Loss and misuse are guarded against by reasonable safeguards (IPP 5), and information is kept only as long as its purpose lasts (IPP 9): server logs for 90 days at most, correspondence until the matter closes and for as long as possible claims require. A notifiable privacy breach, one that has caused or is likely to cause serious harm, is reported to the Privacy Commissioner and to the people affected.
Access and correction
Any person can ask for access to the information held about them (IPP 6) and for correction of it (IPP 7). The answer comes as soon as reasonably practicable and no later than 20 working days after the request is received (section 40).
Complaints
A person who believes their privacy has been breached may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
