Racing

Greyhounds are the subject here, and they are also the part of racing with the least future. This section explains how racing bets are taken and paid, with the dogs in front.

The Racing Integrity Board oversees the sport. A stake can go on at fixed odds or into the tote, where the pool payout is a dividend, and The rulebook of TAB NZ names the bets: first four, trifecta, exacta and quinella among the exotics, with win, place and each way as the basics. Horse racing and the Melbourne Cup follow the same logic.

Staged closure of greyhound racing starts on 1 August 2026. From that date no offshore operator may accept a bet on a greyhound race either.
